Collaborating with Ascend AI, CSG Launched an Electric Power-Specific Innovation Platform and Foundation Model Based on MindSpore

On September 26, China Southern Power Grid (CSG) hosted a conference in Guangzhou and launched an AI-powered innovation platform and the first foundation model specific to the electric power industry. The platform and foundation model (MegaWatt) are independently developed by CSG AI Technology Co., Ltd. During the conference, Liang Shouyu, the company's Deputy General Manager and a senior technical expert at CSG, demonstrated these two products, which are expected to stimulate AI innovation and application within the electric power industry, thereby accelerating intelligent transformation and upgrade of the industry.

At the launch event, Ding Cheng, MindSpore General Manager of Huawei and head of the MindSpore Open Source Community, as well as Li Jiguang, Director of Electric Account Dept of Huawei, delivered speeches and participated and launch ceremony.

AI Innovation Platform for the Electric Power Industry

This platform, which consolidates computing resources from enterprises like Huawei, enables flexible scheduling of computing resources and is fully compatible with multiple AI frameworks, including MindSpore. Currently, the AI platform has been constructed to provide training, fine-tuning, and deployment services for users, serving as an algorithm and model training hub. Equipped with electric power samples, model libraries, training environments, and computing resources, the platform provides developers with flexible, user-friendly, and comprehensive model service products. In addition, it consolidates scattered events such as AI-themed competition operations and coupon distribution on one platform and carry various AI services in a unified manner.

According to Liang Shouyu, on the AI platform, users can use models with adjusted parameters, create their own models, and hold AI algorithm competitions.

"The release of the platform marks the formation of systematic service capabilities that comprehensively serve the upstream and downstream ecosystems of the electric power industry. It helps upstream and downstream users of the industry chain to carry out model training and data convergence and innovation based on the platform, thereby promoting the industry's intelligent transformation and driving the development of the AI industry." Hu Rong, Deputy General Manager of CSG Digital Group, said that the platform had completed the training and verification of foundation models with tens of billions of parameters, achieving optimal learning outcomes. Some indicators have reached or even exceeded the international level.

MegaWatt—First Electric Power Foundation Model

MegaWatt, built on self-innovated computing devices and operators, is trained on tens of billions of data, including natural human corpses, basic knowledge of the electric power industry, electric power service regulations, and research reports from the industry. Encompassing the professional knowledge and experience of engineers across multiple fields within the power system, MegaWatt has the capabilities of knowledge retrieval, intent identification (for multi-round dialogs), professional data processing, intelligent writing assistance, intelligent identification of industry scenarios, intelligent assistance in operations, and security risk control.

As the inaugural product of the AI platform, MegaWatt can provide the industry with the Chain of Thoughts (CoT) capability of the electric power system and streamline the service system.

"CSG has advantages in scenario-oriented construction, professional knowledge accumulation, and power grid-specific data. Concurrently, Huawei possesses industry-leading computing hardware, a continuously iterative and upgraded AI framework, and extensive experience in foundation model training. Each party brings its unique expertise to the table, complementing the other's capabilities," Ding Cheng stated. He also expressed his aspiration to intensify collaboration with CSG in the construction of computing clusters and the R&D of dedicated electric power operators, with the shared goal of advancing the digital transformation of the energy and electric power industry.
